Edward Brewer was born in the Parish of Penton, Andover, Hampshire. He attested for the 2nd 23rd Regiment at Chatham, Kent, on 11 October 1870, aged 19 years, six months. Serving in the Ashantee War 1873-74, he was discharged in July 1875, being found unfit for further service as a consequence of his service on the West African coast.
