John Barlow was born at Stoke on Trent in 1813, and enlisted at Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, for the 39th Foot, on 4 July 1832. He was appointed Drummer in May 1837 and Drum-Major in January 1841, but was reduced to Private by Court Martial for being drunk on duty in October 1841. He was again tried by Court Martial in June 1842, this time for disobedience and insubordination. He was present at the action at Maharajpoor on 29 December 1843, and was severely wounded in the shin of his left leg. In January 1847, he volunteered into the 24th Foot and served with the Army of the Punjab in 1848 and 1849. He was present at the actions at Sadoolapore and Chilianwala, where he was again wounded in the calf of his left leg. He was discharged unfit at Chatham on 26 July 1853, and died at Lichfield on 23 February 1880, aged 67 years, Sold with copy service record and other research.
