William Taylor was born at Knighton, Radnorshire, on 10 March 1869 and enlisted for the South Wales Borderers at Presteign on 10 February 1888. He served in the ranks for 11 years 214 days, and was appointed Sergeant-Major on 12 September 1899, a rank he held throughout the Boer War, being mentioned in Lord Roberts’ despatch of 29 November 1900. He was discharged to pension in 1906 but rejoined the 8th Battalion as R.S.M. in 1914, was commissioned as Lieutenant & Quarter Master on 17 September 1914, and later invalided out. Captain Taylor died at Lenham Heath, near Maidstone, on 24 March 1948.
