A gold C.B. and Kaffir War pair awarded to Colonel Thomas Inglis, Royal Engineers

Thomas Inglis was commissioned as Ensign in the Royal Engineers on 17 June 1843, and became Lieutenant in April 1846. He served in the Kaffir War of 1850-52, throughout the year 1851 as Garrison Adjutant at Grahamstown, and as Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General in the field (Medal). He was awarded the Order of the Bath, C.B. (Civil), in 1884 for his work in connection with Iron Defence, a subject to which he had from an early date devoted himself. He was present at every experiment carried on at Shoeburyness between 1857 and 1884 in the ‘Great Duel’ between guns and armour. In 1867 he had been made Inspector of Iron Fortifications at the War Office, and two years later became Superintendent of Works, Manufacturing Department. He was appointed Colonel on 21 November 1874, and retired in 1884. Sold with further research.
