D.C.M. London Gazette 15 November 1918. The following details are a combination of his official citation and the recommendation published in The Tank Corps Honour and Awards. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and resource in an attack on August 22 1918, when in action south of Meaulte. When his tank was approaching the first objective, this man noticing that the infantry in the rear were being held up by a machine-gun which had been overlooked, at once left his tank and attacked the two machine gunners from behind, killing one with his revolver and capturing the other. He then returned to the tank and informed the tank commander, who signalled to the infantry to come on. The tank at the time was under machine-gun fire from the front. His prompt and courageous action enabled the infantry to continue the advance.’
