D.S.M. London Gazette 9 September 1941: ‘Able Seaman John Joseph Kenny, H.M.S. Nasturtium. For enterprise, skill and devotion to duty in action against enemy submarines.’
The corvettes Nasturtium, Celandine and Gladiolus, acting as escorts to convoy HX 133, sank the German submarine U-556 in the North Atlantic on 27 June 1941. The U-Boat captain, Herbert Wohlfarth, an experienced commander with a distinguished record and a holder of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, was captured together with most of his crew. Six men were lost. Three members of the crew of H.M.S. Nasturtium were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Sold with additional research.
