A Second War B.E.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant Alice M. Steeds, Auxiliary Territorial Service

British Empire Medal,
G.VI.R., 1st issue, Military, with ribbon bow (39357 Sgt., A.T.S.); Defence and War Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf; General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Malaya (Miss M. Steeds) note initial ‘M’, extremely fine (4) £120-150

B.E.M. London Gazette 8 June 1944. The recommendation states ‘This N.C.O. has done outstanding work with the Senior Officers School since her posting to this company in November 1942. She is in charge of a cookhouse catering for nearly 300 personnel, comprising, officers, Sergeants and O.R. messes. This combined cooking calls for exceptional organising ability. In addition to her cookhouse duties Sergeant Steeds is entirely responsible for the food stores and accounting. This Sergeant has devoted her entire time to this work which entails exceptionally long hours, but is invariably carried out in an efficient and cheerful manner. It is felt that this N.C.O. has performed outstanding services which are of a marked degree in excess of her rank.’

The M.I.D. has not been confirmed.
