Pair: Native Sergeant S. Teulo, British South Africa Police

War Medal 1939-45; Colonial Police Forces L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue, with Second Award Bar (6698 Native Sgt. Teulo, B.S.A.P.), very fine or better (2) £140-160

Sajeni Teulo, a member of the Angoni Tribe, was born in Nyasaland, and enlisted in the British South Africa Police in July 1920, following active service in the Great War with 3/2nd King’s African Rifles, which unit saw a good deal of action in East Africa in 1917.

Serving as a Drill Instructor for much of his career, he was awarded his Colonial Police Forces L.S. & G.C. in August 1938 and a Bar in November 1945, and clearly left behind a good impression on his retirement in the rank of Sergeant in March 1948, his obituary in
Mapolisa in June 1959 reporting that he was one of the finest instructors to ever have served at the African Police Training School:

‘The old and stout bow-legged Teulo was popularly known in those good old days as “Tende, E’ E’ Chendi!,” a command which he used to emphasize with his deep and big low voice. At times it used to frighten some of his squad ... On the occasion of his death, a batch of the African Police Platoon travelled out to Mangula under Acting Station Sergeant Machado to attend the funeral of their old friend and to pay their last respects. Some of the members who travelled out there acted as pallbearers, whilst a bugler, who had also travelled out there for the occasion, sounded the
Last Post at the grave side.’

Sold with a quantity of original documentation, including official letter recommending the recipient for promotion, dated 20 January 1923, two signed and dated passes, one for Portuguese East Africa, and his B.S.A.P History Sheet, together with full research.
