In May 1921 the government of Canada passed an act authorizing a change to larger nickel 5-cent pieces, and subsequently the majority of the 1921 mint run of over 2 million silver 5-cents was melted down. Estimates of the number of surviving specimens vary but it is thought that fewer than 400 exist
