M.S.M. London Gazette 17 June 1918. ‘... in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Forces in France during the present war.’ ‘18055 Cpl. (A./Sjt.), R.E. (Thornton Heath).’

H. R. Whiting was born on 21 May 1887 and attested for the Royal Engineers on 21 October 1908. Entering the France/Flanders theatre of war in August 1914, he probably served with one of the Fortress Companies R.E. During 1918 he was appointed an Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 and in March 1924 was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant (Warrant Officer Class 2). Whiting was awarded the Army Long Service Medal in October 1926. In December 1928 he was posted to Portsmouth as an Engineer Ledger-Keeper Quartermaster Sergeant in the Establishment for Engineer Services, R.E. Whiting was discharged from the Regular Army in October 1929. In 1936 he enlisted into the Territorial Army, possibly serving in one of the Royal Engineer Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Battalions which subsequently became part of the Royal Artillery.
