M.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1918. ‘... in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field during the present war.’ ‘53050 Sjt., R.E. (Leven).’ - awarded for service in France.

Edward Francis MacClafferty was born in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, on 13 July 1880. Educated privately and at the Glasgow Engineering Academy, at the time of the Great War he was employed as a Marine Engineer and Submarine Diver. He attested as a Sapper at the R.E. Depot, Kircaldy, on 19 September 1914, aged 34 years; his home address at the time being Parkside, Carstairs. Serving in France, 14 January 1916-21 August 1918, he served with the 30th Signal Company R.E. until April 1915 when he was transferred to the A.W. Cable Section R.E. For his services with this unit he was awarded the M.M. and M.S.M. Promoted to Sergeant on 1 June 1916, he was discharged to a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers (Inland Water Transport) on 21 August 1918. As a Lieutenant (temporary Captain) he was discharged in France on 30 March 1920.
