Edward Crisp Farman was born on 8 November 1897, the second son of Ernest L. Farman of Bayswater, London. Privately educated, he served as a Private in the 9th Battalion London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles), entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 January 1915. He was discharged on 11 February 1916 and was awarded the Silver War Badge. In 1918 he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force and in 1921 was serving with No. 100 Squadron at Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire.At the Staff College, Andover, 1932. Attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force, 1940-42 and commanded 16 Maintenance Unit, R.A.F., 1942-43. For his services he was awarded the C.B.E. in 1944. Was A.O.C., 56 Wing, 1945; Senior Equipment Staff Officer, Transport Command, 1945-46; S.A.S.O. 40 Group, 1947; A.O.C., 42 Group, 1947-49; Director of Equipment (D) Air Ministry, 1949-50, and S.A.S.O., Maintenance Command, 1951-53. Appointed an Air Commodore in October 1946 and Air Vice-Marshal in February 1951, he retired in 1953 and was awarded the C.B. Air Vice-Marshal Farman died on 26 July 1966.
