William Lewis was born in Bilston, Staffordshire and enlisted at Barnsley, having previously served in the Boer War. Serving with the 2nd Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, aged 39 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Henry and Betsy Lewis and husband of Hannah Lewis, of 18 James Street, Warsborough Dale, Barnsley, Yorkshire. With copied m.i.c. and casualty details.
