Charles Vincent Holder was born on 29 May 1885, at Cornwall House, Lavender Hill, London, S.W., in the Parish of Clapham. He was the son of Edward Henry and Annie Holder. An Artist by occupation and living at 128 Wrottesley Road, Harlesdon, London, N.W., he attested for the Territorial Force at London on 8 August 1914, aged 29 years. As a Private in the 1st/2nd Battalion London Regiment he served in Malta, 5 September 1914-5 January 1915 and in France/Flanders, 6 January-25 October 1915. In France, the battalion served at L’Epinette, the defence of Ypres and actions at Hooge and Menin Road. In October 1915 Holder returned to England and on 1 November 1915 was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. After training he returned to France and was posted to the 5th (Service) Battalion. 2nd Lieutenant Holder was killed in action in the attack on Delville Wood on 24 August 1916, aged 31 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. With copied service papers and m.i.c.
