William Munton Gunthorpe was born in Antigua on 8 January 1811, and was appointed Ensign in the Madras Native Infantry in January 1826. He became a Lieutenant in March 1832, and Captain in January 1842. Promoted to Major by Brevet in June 1854, he died at Rangoon on 11 July 1858. See also Lot 439 for medal to his son.
