Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Charasia (918 Pte. J. Meek, 92nd Highrs.) extremely fine and a very rare casualty £500-600
Private James Meek was killed in action at the battle of Charasia, 6 October 1879, by a gun shot to the chest. A total of only 6 British and 10 Indian soldiers were killed in this action, although a further seven men subsequently died of their wounds. Major (later Field Marshal) G. S. White, of the 92nd Highlanders, won the Victoria Cross partly for his gallantry at Charasia when he led an attack on an enemy occupied hill, and, ‘in the teeth of a volley which laid low five of his men, clambered over the breastwork, and fell upon the Afghans who, incontinently, gave up the game and ran for their lives.’
