Claude McCaul Alston was born on 29 September 1892, and educated at Charterhouse. He received his commission in the Royal Scots Fusiliers in September 1912, and was gazetted Lieutenant, to date from the 27th October 1914, the day on which he was killed. Lieutenant Alston was originally reported as wounded and missing but later reported as having been killed in action near Ypres, in Flanders, while with the VIIth Division, about the 27th October 1914.
