A Second War Battle of Britain Spitfire Pilot’s group of four to Wing Commander E. S. Hogg, 152 Squadron, Royal Air Force, who flew over 60 sorties during the Battle of Britain, and claimed a share in the destruction of a JU 88

Squadron Leader Edward Sydney Hogg was born in Yorkshire in 1917. He joined the R.A.F.O. on short service commission, March 1937 and carried out his intermediate and advanced training at 8F.T.S., Montrose; posted to 66 Squadron at Duxford on 19 January 1938; Instructor with 11 F.T.S., Perth and 12 F.T.S., Grantham, October 1938 to November 1939.

During the Battle of Britain Hogg served with 152 Squadron, being engaged on many convoy patrols and ‘X Raids’, flying over 60 scrambles in the Battle of Britain, including 23 August 1940 ‘J.U. 88 intercepted’, resulting in the confirmed shared destruction of this aircraft.

He was posted away from 152 Squadron in October 1940 and in December went to 58 O.T.U., remaining there until November 1941, when he was moved to 4 F.T.S. In September 1943 Hogg was posted overseas to Canada and served at a unit in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan as an Instructor. He returned to the U.K. in June 1945 and was released from the R.A.F. in October, with the rank of Wing Commander. He died on 23 December 1986 and is buried at Helmsley churchyard, Leeds, Yorkshire.
