Auction Catalogue
Dominica, Authority of September 1798, Moco or One-and-a-Half Bitts (valued at One Shilling and Three-Halfpence), a circular segment, most likely from a Spanish-American 8 Réales, with 15 crenations, one side stamped with a raised script d radiate, small star within the loop of the letter, 3.24g/50.0gr (Prid. 22 [Sale, lot 290]; KM. 1). Extremely fine but struck slightly off-centre £100-150
Due to differing thicknesses and diameters of the 8 réales from the various Spanish-American mints there is a variance in the official mocos from the legislated weight of 48 grains, as provided for in the September 1798 Act. A moco over 48 grains is unusual and this fact, combined with the high quality of the countermark punch, points to this specimen almost certainly being official
