The Iron Steam Mail Ship Volta, gross tonnage of 1,477, which had been built in Govan in 1870, was taken up by Commodore Hewett in late 1873 from its owners The British Steam Navigation Company. An Engineer by the name of Vickery is recorded in Colonial Office records as having been engaged during the Ashantee War.
