The 'Bloody Eleventh' earned their soubriquet at the battle of Salamanca where they suffered casualties amounting to 45 killed and 296 wounded. Only 62 men lived to claim the clasp to their M.G.S. medal.
Thomas Appleton joined the 1st Battalion 11th Foot as a Drummer on 30 September 1807, a volunteer from the Royal East Middlesex Militia, for 7 years service. Posted to Madeira for guard duty with his regiment, he fell sick in March 1809 and remained at Madeira when the 11th Foot departed for Portugal the following July. After a lengthy period of sickness he finally rejoined his regiment in the Peninsula in April 1812, subsequently taking part in the battles of Salamanca and Toulouse. He was discharged on 31 December 1814, having completed his period of service. Sold with muster roll details.
