Peter Burns was born in Inverness. A Papermaker by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Cameron Highlanders, he attested for the Seaforth Highlanders at Fort George, 10 August 1885, aged 18 years. Served as a Drummer, March 1886-July 1887 and March 1888-June 1892. He served in the East Indies, December 1887-March 1893. Transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1893 and discharged on 9 August 1897.
