James Abram Garfield (1831-81), elected to the Ohio legislature, 1859; raised a regiment and fought in the Civil War, defeating a Confederate army at Middle Creek, 1862; won a seat in Congress, 1863; appointed leader of the Republican party, 1876; secured the presidential nomination, 1880; elected 20th President of the United States, 1881; shot by Charles Guiteau, a disaffected candidate for political office, 2 July 1881; died 19 Sept. 1881.
