Citation: ‘For conspicuous gallantry on 4th October 1917, when in the attack on the German lines (Pheasant Farm) near Poelcappelle, France.’ (ref.
British Gallantry Awards, The Sherwood Foresters, compiled by C. Housley).

William Dexter Clowes was born in Shirland, Derbyshire and enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Serving with the 9th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action, during the battle of the Sambre, 4 November 1918. He was buried in the Sebourg British Cemetery.
