George Garnett was born in the Parish of Pleasley, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. A Miner by occupation and a member of the the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he attested for full-time service at Derby on 14 March 1892, aged 20 years, 11 months. He served with the 2nd Battalion, serving overseas in India, December 1892-December 1901. For his services he was awarded the I.G.S. 1895 with clasps for Punjab Frontier and Tirah. Transferred to the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment in October 1898. Discharged in March 1903.
