Joseph McCarrol was born in Bantyre, Lanark, Scotland, on 9 July 1888. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 92nd (48th Highlanders) Battalion at Toronto in September 1915 and arrived in England in May 1916, where he was posted to the 5th Reserve Battalion and thence the Canadian Engineers - serving with the 7th Battalion in France. He was gassed on 13 January 1918 for which he required seven days to recover. He was discharged in March 1919; sold with copied service papers.
