Hugh Ross was born in Earltown, Nova Scotia. A Teamster by occupation, he enlisted into the 138th (Edmonton) Battalion at Edmonton on 3 May 1916. Transferred to the 49th Edmonton Regiment in France during December 1916, he was attached to the 7th Trench Mortar Battery in March 1917 and won the M.M. on 15 March 1918 for his bravery during the German offensive on the Somme- during the battle he was wounded by shrapnel in his right eye. Ross transferred to the 3rd Canadian Machine Gun Corps in May 1918 and was discharged in March 1919. He died in Vancouver on in March 1962; sold with original - but damaged - photograph of the recipient in uniform, and copied service papers.
