James Frederick Ashford was born in London, England, on 13 December 1880. A Plumber by trade, he enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in August 1915, stating that he had previously served in the Yorkshire Light Infantry - including active service in the 2nd Battalion in India and South Africa, as per the above described Medals & clasps.

Posted to the Royal Canadian Regiment, he was embarked for France in November 1915, where he was wounded in the face on 29 March 1917, and evacuated to England. Returning to his unit in the Field at the end of the same year, he was transferred to the Canadian Labour Pool in the summer of 1918, and was discharged in England in September 1919; sold with copied service record.
