Waterloo 1815 (Lieut. Loftus Richards, 1st Batt. 71st Reg. Foot.) fitted with steel clip and ring suspension, edge bruise, otherwise very fine £4500-5500

Loftus Richards belonged to the family of ‘Richards of Macmine’, County Wexford. He was first appointed to the army as an Ensign in the 71st Foot in 1807, and was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1808. He served with the 71st in the Peninsula from September 1810 to April 1814, being present at the actions of Sobral, Fuentes d’Onor, Arroyo dos Molinos, Almaraz, Alba de Tormes, Vittoria, Nivelle, Nive, Garris, Orthes, Aire, Tarbes, and Toulouse. Lieutenant Richards was severely wounded by a musket ball in the leg at the battle of Vittoria. He was afterwards present at the battle of Waterloo and is noted by both Challis and Hall as having also been wounded in that battle. He was placed on half-pay on 26 February 1816.
