Thomas Cottingham was born in Co. Cavan. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 40th Regiment at Cavan on 14 January 1834, aged 18 years. He served nearly four years in Belouchistan and Afghanistan and nearly seven years in the East Indies. Awarded the Medal for Canadahar Ghuznee Cabul 1842 and Maharajpoor Star 1843. Discharged on 22 October 1852. With copied service papers.
