The Egypt and Sudan campaign medal to Private D. Day, 1st Berkshire Regiment, who was killed in action at Tofrek on 22 March 1885
Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 2 clasps, Suakin 1885, Tofrek (41/1659 Pte. D. Day. 1/Berks. R.) light pitting from star, otherwise good very fine and a rare casualty £1200-1500
Private D. Day was killed in action at the battle of Tofrek on 22 March 1885. He had earlier taken part in the Egypt campaign of 1882 and received the medal without clasp. The clasps for Suakin 1885 and Tofrek are confirmed on the roll, dated Abbassineh, Cairo, 14 September 1885, which also notes ‘dead’ against his name. The regiment had 18 men killed and a further three who subsequently died of their wounds. For their distinguished conduct at this battle the Berkshires gained the prefix ‘Royal’.
Note: Some casualty rolls list Day as missing at Abu Klea, 17 January 1885, but neither he nor his regiment was present in that action.
