James Hall was born in Limerick. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Rifle Brigade at Limerick, on 12 November 1859, aged 14 years. Initially ranked as a Boy, he was appointed a Bugler in 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade in August 1860. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles in 1870 and was variously ranked as a Private or Bugler. Hall served in India, November 1869-April 1887, seeing action in the Second Afghan War. Latterly serving with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, with whom he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Drummer Hall was discharged due to his age on 11 November 1897. With copied service and discharge papers.
