Corporal John Smith, No. 16 Company A.S.C. served in South Africa until invalided to England on 13 June 1900. As a Company Sergeant-Major with the H.Q. Divisional Train A.S.C., he entered France/Flanders on 21 August 1914 - was entitled to the clasp to the 1914 Star. For his services in the first months of the war he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 20 October 1914) and awarded the French Medaille Militaire (A.O.466 of 1914). With copied research.
