Alfred Herbert Culmer was born in St. Peters, Kent on 25 November 1879. He enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 19 March 1897 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in June 1897. Promoted to Ordinary Seaman in November 1897, he served on H.M.S. Barfleur, October 1898-July 1900, being advanced to Able Seaman in April 1900 and taking part in the relief of Pekin operations. Culmer was promoted to Leading Seaman in January 1902, Petty Officer 2nd Class in April 1903, Petty Officer 1st Class in February 1906 and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer on November 1917. He served throughout the Great War on H.M.S. Hussar, September 1914-July 1917 and at H.M.S. Pembroke I, July 1917-December 1919. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in November 1912. Shore pensioned on 26 December 1919.
