Hugh Reginald Baldwin was born on 4 March 1898, the son of E. T. Baldwin, Esq., Barrister-at-Law, of 1 Gloucester Place, Portman Square. He was educated at Mr E. L. Bent’s School, Hayward’s Heath and at Winchester College. He obtained a Prize Cadetship at Sandhurst in April 1916, and passed out in the following October, obtaining a commission in the Irish Guards, joining the 1st Battalion in France in June 1918. Serving in No. 3 Company, he was killed in action whilst leading his platoon, during a barrage near St. Leger, west of Bullecourt, on 27 August 1918. The Colonel of the Regiment wrote of him, ‘During the brief period he had seen in this regiment, he had endeared himself to all ranks, and had won for himself the reputation of a most excellent officer.’

His brother, Midshipman A. E. Baldwin, R.N., was killed in action at the battle of Jutland, when serving on H.M.S. Queen Mary.
