All mint, a rare complete run of numismatic sales organised by Sotheby’s in New York £100-150
Having acquired Parke Bernet Galleries in 1964, Sotheby’s decided to open a numismatic department there in 1968 under the direction of Daniel Fearon, who was sent from London to set it up. Company policy regarding the New York operation remained confused for some years, however; experts came and went and disputes over whether ‘good’ material should be sold in New York or London were frequent. Because of this only a small number of sales were actually staged in New York for the first two decades, although matters improved latterly until the final demise of the department at the end of 2000
