Joseph Sawer was born in Dorking, Surrey, and enlisted into the 60th Rifles in November 1877. He served in Natal from February 1879 to May 1881, during which time he took part in the Zulu War and the First Boer War, being wounded in the foot at the battle of Ingogo River on 8 February 1881.
