Private John Henry Walsh served with the 1st Battalion in India and is entitled to the medal for the Relief of Chitral 1895. Recalled to the Colours at the outbreak of the Boer War, he was destined for the 1st Battalion but could not join as they were besieged at Ladysmith and consequently, with others from the K.R.R.C. and Rifle Brigade, he joined a Provisional Rifle Battalion, attached to the 3rd Battalion. After the relief of Ladysmith he joined “H” Company of the 1st Battalion.
