An unusual early Indian group of three awarded to Major Stephen Douglas, Bengal Horse Artillery, Baggage Master to the Army of the Punjab and to the Delhi Field Force

Major Stephen Douglas landed in India on the 16th May 1826, and joined the 3rd Troop, 1st Brigade, Bengal Horse Artillery. As Sergeant-Major he joined the Army of the Sutlej and was appointed Provost Marshal, being present at the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon. For his services he received an unattached Ensigncy, and was appointed Riding Master to the 1st Brigade Horse Artillery on 15 May 1846. He was appointed as Baggage Master to the Army of the Punjab on 1 December 1848, and was present at the battles of Ramnuggur, Chilianwala and Goojerat. Promoted to Lieutenant in November 1851, he re-embarked for India from furlough in 1855, and received the thanks of the Commander-in-Chief at Bombay, as 2nd in Command of a Detachment of Troops, for the clean and healthy appearance of the men. In March 1856 he rejoined as Riding Master to the 3rd Brigade, and in May 1857 he was appointed Baggage Master to the Delhi Field Force. He was present at the battle of Badlee-ke-Serai, the siege of Delhi, and afterwards conducted a large convoy of 4,000 country carts, 2,000 camels, and 60 elephants from Allyghur to Cawnpore. He was subsequently with General Sir Hope Grant’s Force at the taking of Meeah Gunge. He was appointed 2nd in Command of the Allahabad Levy for services, promoted Brevet Captain in February 1861, Major in February 1866, and retired in 1867.
