A K.C.B. Crimean War group awarded to Lieutenant-General Sir E. A. Whitmore, 30th Regiment

The Order of The Bath, K.C.B. (Military) neck badge in 18 carat gold and enamels, hallmarked London 1882, lacking oak leaf ring, and breast star in silver with gold and enamel appliqué centre; Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol, these clasps all contemporary tailor’s copies (Majr. E. A. Whitmore, 30th Regt. A.D.C. to Lt. Genl. Sir G. Brown) contemporary re-engraved naming; Legion of Honour, 5th class breast badge, silver and enamels with gold centres, enamel badly chipped; Order of the Medjidie, 5th class breast badge; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, officers’ striking by ‘J.B.’, the K.C.B. with very minor chips, nearly extremely fine, otherwise nearly very fine or better (6) £1200-1500

Edmund Augustus Whitmore entered the army as an Ensign in August 1842, and served during the Crimean war as Aide-de-Camp to General Sir George Brown. He was present at the battles of the Alma, where he had his horse shot from under him, Inkermann, and at the siege of Sebastopol. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel shortly afterwards, attained the rank of Lieutenant-General in March 1878, and was appointed K.C.B. in December 1882.
