Walter Edward Thornhill first entered France with the British Expeditionary Force on 4 September 1915, being transferred to Egypt on 20 December 1915. Here he was engaged in the construction of the Kantara Military Railway, whilst serving with 115th Railway Company, Royal Engineers. For his services in Egypt he was awarded the M.C., twice Mentioned in Despatches and received the Brevet rank of Major. Sold with copy m.i.c. and London Gazette details.
