Hon. Willoughby John Horace de Montmorency was born on 3 May 1868, son of the 3rd Viscount Frankfort de Montmorency and Rachel Mary, daughter of Field Marshal Sir John Michel. He was educated at Marlborough and entered the Army in 1888, as 2nd Lieutenant in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. He served in the Wuntho Expedition, Burma, 1891-2 (Medal with Clasp); operations of the North West Frontier of India with the Tirah Expeditionary Force (Medal with 2 Clasps); Egyptian Army with rank of Bimbashi, 1898-1900, served on the Nile Expedition 1899, first advance against the Khalifa (Khedive’s Medal with Clasp). Succeeded his father in 1902, as 4th Viscount de Montmorency, resigned from the Army and took over the family estates in Ireland. He died on 5 July 1917. His elder brother, Hon. R. H. L. J. de Montmorency, won the Victoria Cross at Omdurman with the 21st Lancers and was killed during the South African war whilst commanding the unit he had raised, de Montmorency’s Scouts.
