A Large and Impressive Silver Presentation Cigar Box, 150mm by 235mm, 80mm deep, hallmarks for London 1903, the outer cover of the hinged lid with family crest, below which is inscribed ‘To Captn. H. J. Vaughan Phillips, D.S.O., 3rd Battn., South Wales Borderers on his marriage from the officers at Cardiff Barracks’, the front of the box inscribed ‘Major T.L.W. Lucas, Major H.E. Taylor, Capt. O.B. Pritchard, Capt. W.T.B. Rhodes, Capt. J.V. Taylor, Lieut. W.H. Ferrar, Lieut. C.R.W. Allen, 19th April 1904’, the interior gilded and lined with wood, one or two minor dents, otherwise very good condition £300-400
Captain Henry Jacob Vaughan Phillips served in the South Africa 1899-1902 with the 3rd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, performing the duties of both Intelligence and Transport Officer. He was mentioned in Despatches on 10 September 1901, and received his D.S.O. directly from the King on 2 June 1902.
