An unusual Second War ‘Aid to Russia’ B.E.M. awarded to Naik/Fitter Mian Mohammed, Royal Indian Army Service Corps

British Empire Medal, G.VI.R. (Military) 1st issue (108347 Naik/Fitter, R.I.A.S.C.) good very fine £120-150

B.E.M. London Gazette 8 June 1944. The recommendation states: ‘Has accompanied many convoys operating from Khanaquin to Tabriz (680 miles). Travelling in the last lorry of the convoy he has always been one of the last men to reach camp at night. On several occasions during severe winter conditions, with temperatures below 0oF, he has been out until after midnight bringing in broken down vehicles. His ability and keenness have been an important factor in keeping the vehicles of his platoon running. One of the hardest worked men in the platoon he has at all times and in all circumstances remained cheerful and willing, and he has set a fine example.’

Naik/Fitter Mian Mohammed was serving with 305 G.P.T. Company, R.I.A.S.C., engaged in the “Aid to Russia” campaign in1943-44.
