Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf and Pottendorf (1700-60) was a pioneer missionary for the Moravian church, firstly in Europe, but in 1739 visiting the West Indian Island of St Thomas, preaching to the slaves and against slavery. In 1741 he visited Pennsylvania and he later was instrumental in establishing a Moravian settlement in North Carolina
