Three: Second Lieutenant S. J. Parkes, Royal Air Force, formerly South Staffordshire Regiment

Star (8825 Pte., S. Staff. R.); British War and victory Medals (2. Lieut., R.A.F.); together with card box of issue; transmission slip; C.W.G.C. scroll; and a photograph of recipient taken whilst a Private in the South Staffordshire Regiment, nearly extremely fine (3) £180-220

Samuel James Parkes a native of Aldridge, Staffordshire enlisted into the 1/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment in 1915. The Battalion War Diary for 11 August 1915 states ‘S.W. slope of Hill 60. Very quiet day. Aeroplanes of both sides very active. 8825 Pte. S. J. Parkes slightly wounded. Remained at duty.’ He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant (Observer) in the Royal Air Force on 18 February 1918. He was posted to No. 205 Squadron, and on 13 August 1918 was the Observer in a plane piloted by Lieutenant T. Fattorini engaged on a photographic reconnaissance mission in Western France. They never returned from this operation and were presumed to have been killed in action on this date. Sold with a file of comprehensive research detail.
