Horace Foster Clarke was born in Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk. A Draper by occupation, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Trowbridge on 16 January 1900, aged 26 years, 1 month. Posted to the 2nd (Wiltshire) Company 1st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 1 March 1900-10 August 1901. He was discharged at Shorncliffe on 23 October 1901 being found medically unfit for further service. With copied service papers.
