Memorial Plaque (Graham Thirkell) very fine and better (lot) £200-250

Edgar Sidney P. Thirkell was born in 1886. He enlisted into the 13th Battalion County of London Regiment on 4 May 1908. Served in the Great War with the 1st County of London Yeomanry, serving in Egypt; Gallipoli; Salonika and Palestine; often employed in Signal duties. Was disembodied on 26 March 1919. Awarded the T.F.E.M. in November 1918.

Re-enlisted into the Royal Corps of Signals (T.A.) in September 1920 and awarded the clasp to the T.F.E.M. in 1927. Discharged in September 1934.

With Certificate of Disembodiment 1919; Certificate of Discharge, 1934; a number of pre-war ‘City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) Regimental Orders and other papers; 13th (Kensington) Battalion London Regiment Annual Dinner & Prize Distribution Menu Card, 1913; Programme of the 8th Mounted Brigade Horse Show held in Palestine, February 1918; 14 postcard photographs (some inscribed); two other photographs; type-script diary of military service, 1909-February 1919; copied m.i.c.; shoulder chain mail (2) and other smaller items.


Graham Jeffery Thirkell was born in Kensington, London and enlisted at Camberwell Road, London, S.E. into the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders). He entered into the Egypt theatre of war on 7 May 1915 before proceeding to Gallipoli. Serving with “B” Squadron, City of London Yeomanry, he was wounded in the hand on 3 August 1915 and invalided to a hospital ship and thence to Malta. He died on Malta on 13 September 1915 and was buried in the Pieta Military Cemetery. Entitled to the 1914-15 Star trio.

Memorial Plaque in card envelope and with registered envelope addressed to ‘Mr Thirkell, 185 Camberwell Rd., London S.E.’ With pencil written note, dated ‘Hospital Ship, Gallipoli, 4.8.15’, reading, ‘Dear Dad, Am proud of a wound in my left hand received yesterday. Not much damage done & I do not think there are any bones broken. Left Edgar in good spirits & all OK. .....
