Horace Victor Watson was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in November 1899, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer in December 1915 - but saw no active service and was solely entitled to the British War Medal. Advanced to Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class in December 1922, he shortly afterwards transferred to the submarine branch, and remained similarly employed until being invalided ashore in August 1930, although latterly as an Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class - thus employment in H.M. Submarines H-22, H-27, L-7, L-8 and L-71.
