Richard ‘Gin’ Cooper was born on 18 July 1928 and educated at Boldon Colliery Boys’ Intermediate School, Co. Durham. A Builder’s Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the General Service Corps on 21 January 1946. He served variously with the Durham Light Infantry, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, being discharged in January 1958. He re-enlisted into the Royal Green Jackets on 16 July 1959. A specialist in anti-tank gunnery, he was discharged on the reduction of the establishment on 31 March 1969. Cooper then joined the recruiting staff at the High Wycombe Army Information Office.

Also with two official identity disks and an unofficial identity disk, and six cap badges and two cloth badges.
